I know, it’s enough to make the best of us go off searching for something more satisfying like Immortal Bliss in Seven Days, or Indestructible Platitudes. This disease of which I write-slippery devil that it is-is the disease of tidy answers.īut before I jump into the details of this malady and the path of healing, it feels only fair to offer a disclaimer about the story I’m about to tell. Recovery from this disease requires an entirely different kind of medicine. No pills or surgery will hasten the recovery, and no amount of visualization, affirmations, or positive thinking will herald its cure. No hero doctor, charismatic guru, or revered shaman has a proven protocol for treatment. The latter is a disease for which there is no twelve-step program, even though there are millions of us who fall prey. There was the official disease I had, and then the disease I would come to identify as far more soul-crushing.
